I KNEW IT!!!!
I KNEW HAL COULD SENSE HUMAN THOUGHTS, EMOTIONS AND STUFF!!
*sorry 4 yelling but i sensed he had this since he appeared*
Like I said Earlier Hal is Different!
Booker knew somehow that Hal might believe him
otherwise he wouldn’t have said anything to Hal.
This Also means
1 Booker is Bluntness is a constant meaning he doesn’t say anything that has no value.
2 Those who are constantly blunt like that are A) Have no filter or B) Never truly been taken seriously or listened to even though what they say is right (B for Booker)
3 Therefore Booker is the kind of person to should he open up to someone is someone who has nothing to hide and takes responsibility for his actions because he feels there is no reason to lie
4 His honesty is also a sign as a cry for help to an extent if your an honest person then people would listen. He knew Hal would listen this entire conversation and his expression in panel was of relief (and possible doubt that Hal may not believe him either: just depending how you read it)
In the previous page one the comments Booker Listed was” Booker you need to hide your feelings more.” Most people who are truly absolutely manipulative lie nearly or complete compulsiveness
This Means Booker’s honesty Has years of consistency; why? Because Booker is Honest with his thoughts we have seen it several pages over. Thus if Booker was manipulative as others claim to be he wouldn’t be as honest as he is now and if he bent the truth or lied Hal would’ve noticed and most likely called him on it. Hal even said on page in context TO BOOKER that No one is as HONEST AS HIM.
That means from before the comic started and he was younger(considering the last page), from day one when he met Tyler, Day one he met Gabe, from earlier that day when he met Hal Booker has been straight up and honest
why i know?
because the only time Booker acted out of place from how the reader normal sees him are
1panicking when he thought he was gonna die
2 Being the center of attention in class(shyness)
3 Being around his crush(shynessx100)
4 Pissed off when a experience he rather forget(being with tyler) was brought up and followed by ridicule of people he truly cares about( his Father)
Other than that hes been calm, mature, and level headed throughout his appearances
There is sufficient evidence that Booker isn’t Manipulative hes just Blunt and misunderstood a lot
Who agrees? and if you dont why not?
I’m a little concerned about the consistency issues with this comic. I mean… I still love it and I’ll continue reading it but:
The whole scene with Gabe’s argument with Hal seemed out of place if you reread the entire comic. Since Hal WAS training Gabe, then Gabe ran off to do his project, then the Sparkle Four showed up, then Gabe went to the concert, then he went home. Meaning that there’s no reason for Gabe to be upset at Hal for not “training him” or to be upset in general.
Also, Gabe handed Hal his bag in the coffee shop as if he knew him then was confused who Hal was when he got home.
Booker’s own personality seems off. I’ll respond to Levi’s comment from the last page here concerning Booker’s personality. I understand what you are saying that there’s no evidence that Booker is manipulative, but I have to disagree. If you read the comic from the beginning, the friendly attitude Booker shows to Gabe is completely 180 from what he’s telling Hal now. Booker’s actions from the beginning of the comic go past just being “friendly”, there seemed to be a genuine bond there between the two. I’m going to say it now, roommate that are not friends are not going to comfort each other, buy coffee for each other, watch pity movies together, and offer to change their entire life to save the other. Most college people I know (myself included), if they feel the way Booker says he feels towards Gabe then at most they’ll tolerate their roommate’s presence but not go beyond that. So either it’s a consistency issue with the author on Booker and Gabe’s personalities or Booker is purposefully hiding his disdain for Gabe and leading him on with friendship; a very manipulative reaction.
I’m leading towards the first option though because of what Hal said. But then again, if Booker honestly believes what he says (and honestly doesn’t believe he’s manipulative if he actually is) then Hal’s powers are unreliable.
I’m just throwing thoughts out. I’m not trying to bash on Booker anyone. I love my baby too much.
But I don’t think we should rule out that there may be some truth in the “manipulative” accusations everyone keeps saying.
Ok Yeah I get where you see that
As i thought about what you said really good points by the way
On the surface i see where you See that
However there is a constant flow from the Cover page Artistically foreshadow the issue/chapter
Chapter 1 is light and airy pink
Chapter 2 is Slightly darker purple and it continues to stylistically get darker especially when you see the cover for chapter 4
Booker expression and mannerisms have always been constant or within range of a personality like his
He wasnt being friendly necessarily but on the other hand was being considerate of Gabe
Gabe was most-likely crying all day so in order to make him feel better cause we now know how easily he moves on from mood to mood in a day
They watch TV
Booker wanted to see the Barista not get probably overpriced coffee he doesnt throw it away no one would he gives it to someone who might want it and we dont know if Gabe asked him or not between chapters
What the author does(which I Love) is portray the comic artistically as constantly in motion page on and off and forces the readers thoughts to speculate whats next
Like i said be for the cover art portrays the overall feel of the chapter
1 was the Light And Sweet hookup that grabs the reader and makes you attached to the characters
2 was a slightly darker theme a transition chapter and learning chapter of what being a magical is as an overview/introduction. Of how being a magical works in this world
3 is even darker and shows the danger of being a magical and differences between newbies and experience and even then they still almost got destroyed its a danger and false hope chapter both action wise and character development wise because new people doesnt always mean new friends
4 so far is super character development heavy and you read and see how characters act as if a camera was turned off
As you read from chapter to chapter panel by panel gets darker and darker till here we are and.the background is dark its close to black
Its color symbolism and reading it especially since i just reread it this part was coming
An the personality of the characters are not inconsistent the tone and situation is just darker than first thought by the reader
If you read it like its supposed to be predominantly happy go lucky with few downsides then read again for me its when Gabe got attacked pages when they first were published i noticed this
I can see where both DD and Percy are coming from. Its my opinion that the first part of the comic was more the author getting a feel for the characters and the story and testing it all out to see what worked. That’s how it usually works with comics.
Well I would like to raise you another option to kind of explain Booker’s’ behavior. He understands that Gabe is not his friend, it is kind of difficult to explain but I think that he is telling the truth when he says that he doesn’t view Gabe as a friend, but it doesn’t make their interactions fake or weird. I think Booker wants to have a friend, when he was talking to Hal about how people view him I got the sense that he is terribly lonely, that he is always trying to reach out to other people the best he can, but he always seems to fail. For me he looks kind of bitter know, like he knows that after meeting Tyler Gabe will never be his friend. I wonder what happened when Tyler and Brooker were younger.
I get all of your points here and they are all really good honestly but I still don’t believe Booker is manipulative.
I was thinking about the whole Gabe and Booker being friendly towards each other thing and I have come to the conclusion that the things Book has done for Gabe can be seen as something a friend would do or depending on the person it can just be something you’d do for anyone but now I also think that maybe, kind of linking what I am saying with what ViH said, Booker wanted Gabe to be his friend but now he just doesn’t see it happening anymore. I mean it as he wanted to be Gabe’s friend and he was probably trying to be someone Gabe would like to befriend but with Tyler now in the game it’s an option he gave up on because thinking about Gabe’s traits, he will be either torn between Booker and Tyler or believe what he said about Book which might be why he is saying all of those things to Hal, he could’ve just said something about Gabe and left but he is saying so much more, if that’s what is going on Booker thought about the things people used to tell him and he might be convincing himself that he hates Gabe because he doesn’t want to get everything falling right back into him like it always seem to happen.
If that really is the case, it would explain why he was so friendly and now is indifferent, Booker is lonely and probably has difficult making friends, as stated by ViH, he is bitter but none of those traits make him manipulative per say, he is not pretending to be someone he is not and if he was going to manipulate Gabe, I don’t think he would tell Hal about not liking the guy because that really would attract some suspicion from him. I might be making everything more complicated than it really is but well there is that now, also, about the way the story goes, I guess that Gabe was upset because although Hal was training him, he still got his butt kicked and got rescued by others and seeing Tyler and the others might have made him compare himself to them thinking that he is not as good as he should be which explains why he would take it out on the person that is training him, I agree with the part where he doesn’t recognize Hal though, but concerning the characters personalities, if what I said was truly the case it would explain why they are acting so off, Booker would be kind of venting to Hal; that’s all I thought about, I really hope it doesn’t seem like I am saying that you are wrong or anything because we are just theorizing here, hope everything I said sounds okay c:
seeing how brightly Booker smiles on the cover page and how much down he looks on the last few.. dang, me is not sure if me wants to suffer more (because pain is my friend) or organize a ‘protect at all cost’ club. Booker, bae, it’s gonna be fine..
I will be completely honest, I love Gabe just as much as any body else but he seriously needs to open up his damn eyes. Booker has had to deal with so much bullshit his entire life, all because he is a little different, or indifferent. And Gabe while I’m sure his life has had it’s up’s and down’s has had it pretty easy. Yes I understand that Gabe may have been ostracized from his family because of the way he looks, but he can make friends so easily, he’s just that kind of person. Booker, on the other hand has had to deal with the repercussions of who his father is and has also had to deal with the fact that people just don’t except who he is. In this situation, while I understand that Booker could try a little harder, I really sympathis with him over Gabe. Someone give that gorgeous baby a hug and a cookie.
I feel like while Gabe was gone Tyler was legit working to use magics to clown with his mind. I’m not completely sure what it is that Tyler’s up to, but that’s my half-baked hypothesis.
i’m actually very nervous for booker. being in this situation and being aware of it could easily cause him to develop attitudes that aren’t healthy. like self harm or bad shit like that.
I agree Gabe hasn’t earned Book’s friendship yet. With how Gabe is suddenly so wary of his ‘best friend’ after hearing something unpleasant about him, I’m pretty disappointed in Gabe as well.
I can’t believe he took sides with people he literally just met that day over someone who comforted him and promised to transform into a magical when the need arises to save him even though they’ve only known each other for a few months. So Booker wasn’t there that day when he was attacked by a ladybug, but should Booker really take blame for that? What about those times of him lounging in Booker’s space and hanging out with him? Those times Booker was always completely honest with him and then try to cheer him up afterwards? Where is his faith in Booker dammit!

I totally. with this statement 😄
Agree was deleted by my silly phone i meant agree
Damn didn’t know he could do that
seeing how brightly Booker smiles on the cover page and how much down he looks on the last few.. dang, me is not sure if me wants to suffer more (because pain is my friend) or organize a ‘protect at all cost’ club. Booker, bae, it’s gonna be fine..
Alright, who wants to form a protect Booker at all cost club?
I do
Count me in!
I was born to enter that club
Me.

I agree and I will serve some milk with that cookie XD
I feel like while Gabe was gone Tyler was legit working to use magics to clown with his mind. I’m not completely sure what it is that Tyler’s up to, but that’s my half-baked hypothesis.

A normal human you say, Hal? But is Booker one? (or was Hal checking for lies earlier when looking with sparkly eyes at Booker’s ‘magic?’ aura?)
So, wait. Can someone help me get an idea of Hal’s voice?
I think he has a 20’s mobster or maybe Chicago-ish accent because he entered the comic with a fat cigar and a “look kid” manner of speaking.
