Nature of webcomics sadly. Especially ones that update once a week and have a lot of fictional names and terms. It’ll probably be a lot easier to understand once it’s done and you can binge the archive.

Vetal is a country–Oswald and company serve there, and it’s where Olbrecht is from. Vetal provided support to religious converts in the neighboring country (Wilfrid’s country, although I can’t remember the name right now, oops) to overthrow the king there. A “puppet king” was installed, and it would seem that Wilfrid was among the political prisoners taken after the coup. I don’t remember if it was stated whether the previous (rightful?) king was killed or if he escaped, but Olbrecht’s lover might be the king? Or possibly a noble who had ties to the previous king and is trying to lay low to avoid getting imprisoned with the other political prisoners.

If it helps, it was previously stated that the religions in the comic are based on the Abrahamic traditions–Vetal, essentially, practices Christianity, Wil’s country is (was?) Islamic, and the Ash people (Beppe and Anton) are Jewish. So basically, Vetal, a Christian country, supported Christian converts in Wil’s country who wanted to overthrow the Muslim king. A Christian “puppet king” then took over. Additionally, Vetal took over places like Beppe’s city, which were Ash, and forcefully converted people.

I think that about sums it up?
