      Effectively sympathizing with one’s opponent makes it hard for the opponent to fight.
      Remember the scene in Saving Private Ryan where the German with the knife stabs the paratrooper by “comforting” him as he pushes the knife in? It works with livestock and with other mammals, and it helps the one doing the killing feel better about the act of killing – on that second aspect, see Woodland Indians thanking animal spirits for allowing themselves to be killed and eaten.
      Accounts from West African and Meso-American human sacrifice empires show similar behaviours (West Asian, North African and Celtic ones were not recorded by the anthropologically minded).

        I do remember that scene; it’s really cool that you brought that up. Hmm, it could all just be a ploy to throw her off her game. This Margrave character seems sneakily cruel.

    Last week, I picked this comic pretty much by chance from Hiveworks’ spread-page.

    I am so happy I did. It’s glorious, beautiful and awesome. It’s also remarkably brutal, while diminishing none of the prior traits, which is itself an amazing treat.
