Honestly if he is punishing himself he seems like less of an asshole to me. A commander who treats himself the same as his men is a good one.
If he’s punishing himself. I can forgive him for having Bepe whipped, if this is a normal thing and how everyone is punished.

  I’m pretty sure he’s flagellating himself for religious reasons, given the emphasis on the church and the altar, not because he had Beppe flogged.

    Seems that way to mee too.
    Which means he’s still an asshole. He just so happens to be religious AND an asshole (which are separate but non-exclusive characteristcs) instead of just one.
