I’m confused but intrigued, which is always a good state to be in at the beginning of a work. I love the two panels where Morgan’s eyes activate. The inversion of her eyes with the background is suitably off-putting.

Dead Endings ended up being a fun read. It stricks a nice balance between fun and creepy. I must say, I never suspected Elizabeth. Her choice in the end makes sense for the character and ties the story together in a nice bow, but I have to wonder what our ghost investigators would have done with her if she hadn’t killed herself.

I really like that the ending has finality to it, but still seems open for short stories, extras and possibly more big adventures. I don’t expect any sequels, but I like the nagging possibility. Endings like that are one of my anti-petpeeves for whatever reason.

Considering everything that led up to this chapter, that was the best conclusion to the book I could hope for. I’m so proud of Kado for finally resolving to take Touya down, which he’s always been in the best position to do since he’s the closest to Touya. Now that he has committed himself to it fully, their miniscule chance of success should grow slightly less miniscule!

I loved the volcano imagery at the end as well. It reminded me of some quotes from Heart of Darkness (I hate that book, but it does have a few striking quotes).

I’ve enjoyed Dead Endings so far, but I struggle trying to find anything to talk about after each chapter. I can only ever think of “Welp, some interesting stuff happened and I can’t wait to read the next chapter.” Since this section of the forum is so quite, I imagine most of its other readers are the same. But it’s so empty that I feel like I have to post at least a little something, even if it’s just saying I’ve got nothing to say.

I found Demyan less immediately likable but more intriguing than Toivo. He’s much more stable than I expected him to be after how the first chapter ended. He seems to straddle a strange line between calculating and unstable with a touch of melancholy. It makes him much harder to figure out, which creates an interesting (and unexpected) contrast with the clearer Toivo. I already can’t wait to see them meet!

I’m glad August doesn’t play the good guy for too long. I liked him at first, but the more page time he has the more squicky I find him. Every scene he’s in just makes him seem slightly more and more controlling. I’m glad Clio (and we) won’t be wasting too much time on him.

These last few chapters in the city also revived the Alice in Wonderland feel that the first chapter gave me because of all of the old timey clothes and trippy masquerades.

I’ve only had time to read one page of chapter 6 so far. I absolutely DO NOT trust August. I like him so far, but I’m convinced he’s evil or at least working with the bad guys. You can’t have something so perfect in a world of horrors without doing something evil to get it. I’m just waiting for him to betray Clio somehow.

I’m kinda confused about the setting, though. Are they now in a cluster of buildings surrounded by a wall in the middle of the bigger Gauntlet city? Or did they exit that city and enter a new adjacent one somehow? Or are they just in one very large building that August owns?

Haha, I see. Speaking of pronunciations, how do you pronounce Kalvia? I’m not very familiar with anything Russian. Since it’s a transliterated language, am I correct to assume you pronounce it essentially how it looks? Like Toivo is pronounced “Toy-vo”?

I can’t wait to read more, but I’ll have to wait a bit longer since I’m a free user.

Quick question: is swearing okay in the forums?

Wow, I really enjoyed the first chapter. I love Toivo so far, which is weird since I usually like the morally ambiguous and plain old crazy characters better. Characters in his kind of position, a naturally happy person who’s surrounded by extreme sadness and negativity, tend to either submit to the negativity and become cynical or be overly peppy. Toivo is neither, which gives him a very attractive or magnetic personality. It’s too early to say whether I’ll like Demyan, although as I said I tend to like that kind of character and I like what we’ve seen of him so far. I’ll admit though, I rolled my eyes when I saw his name. Naming the demon-ish guy Demyan is a bit… heavy-handed.

I agree with sgl. The writing style is great. It’s engaging and flows really well, vivid without being excessively wordy.

The first chapter came out at a great time of year as well. With a lot of people suffering from glacial weather, I’m sure many readers (myself included) could relate to the descriptions of the bitter cold. I noticed this with Dead Endings as well, but it’s much more prominent here (for obvious reasons).

That was an interesting start. It’s been awhile since I read a good mystery, so I have high hopes for this one.

I’d like to read a good, old fashioned epic or happy-go-lucky adventure with traits like a variety of lands and peoples, fantastical creatures, creative powers, long journeys and quests, and copious sword fights.

I read volume 13 of Otomen today, and I’m still coming down from the emotional sugar high it gave me. Otomen can only be described as a guilty pleasure that I don’t have to feel guilty about. It’s so cheesy and has so many flaws, but it’s just so sweet and fun and has a great theme of subverting gender stereotypes that I can’t help but love it.

I usually don’t have much time for video games, but with a new Zelda game out, I had to make time. I’m only a few dungeons in, but I’m enjoying it. I never played A Link to the Past as that was before my time, so nostalgia doesn’t play into the game for me like it does for most people I’ve heard talking about A Link Between Worlds. I really like Lorule with its weird little details that contrast with Hyrule (seeing the Lorule triforce on load screens always makes me smile for some reason). I don’t know what’s with Princess Hilda, but she interests me quite a bit.

Sorry for the late reply, but yeah, it’s missing on older posts while it appears on recent (like say less than a half hour old) posts.
