Oh, we have big plans for visual novels–I wish I could say more right now! If all goes well, we’ll be doing a big announcement in a couple months :D

Also, since in-character Q&As seem to be of interest to a lot of you, that’s something we’ll definitely do for at least some of our series. I’m starting with Awake since audio takes the most lead time and I want to squeeze this into our next recording sessions. You can head over to the Awake forum and ask the characters some questions in the thread there if you’d like–here’s the link.

The full editorial staff had a very long, involved meeting this evening, full of wonderful, horrible ideas for sexy spin-offs of our series. Let’s just say…Valentine’s day 2014 is going to be interesting.

Sorry for all the vagueness–I guess that’s what happens when your plans are all huge and at least a little ridiculous. If we manage to pull off everything we have planned for 2014, it’s going to be an awesome year!

Sorry I’ve been off the forum so long–so much traveling and holiday stuff these past few weeks!

Heh, I’m glad you’re enjoying the other sides of Travis! He’s in a bad place during this story, obviously, but there’s always going to be more to someone than endless, obnoxious anger and yelling. I was really happy to get to show a little more of both him and Rosa in this past chapter.

Unfortunately, as the “nice” one, Seb is the one who gets to have awkward conversations with difficult people. And that’s all I have to say about that, for now :D

Whoa, Neila! Your prompt is awesome, and so is all your art! Thank you so much for doing that!

Actually, do you mind if I put the art you did for the prompt on tumblr, with a link to the contest? We’ll obviously credit you in the post! I think it might be a good way to get the word out a little further!

    Thanks again!

Hi Lene! I’m really glad you’re enjoying Awake, and thank you so much for subscribing! We’ve got some good discussion going on in the Awake forum, if you’re interested in joining in!

Eh, I think it’s fair to say that if someone hasn’t heard Awake chapter 4 yet they should stay away from the Awake chapter 4 thread, so spoil away!

[big gross noise] is the best! Made with a plunger, some old paint cans, and a bucket of water that I almost splashed my sound equipment with by accident.

Yeah, the character bios and some of the bonus content are still down–it’s all related to the same issues we’re having with our host which are unfortunately turning out to be really difficult to deal with. We’ll post here when things are back up–it should be fixed by the Friday update, but considering how the technical side has been going lately I don’t want to make any promises. Sorry, guys.

Unfortunately, we’ve been having some technical problems since the last update. We’ve got our web people on it, but the problem is weirdly complicated and it still isn’t fixed yet. We’ll post on here once that content’s back up.

Sorry for the problem, hopefully it’ll be back up soon!

Hmm…this hadn’t occurred to us before, but I like the idea of an in-character q-and-a. It would work better for some series/characters than others, and it also depends which writers are up for it, but I think it’s definitely an idea we could do a lot of cool things with. Thanks for the suggestion, guys!

No problem! I copyedited that chapter of Gauntlet and that word didn’t ping me as wrong when I read it, so I hadn’t looked into it very deeply before now. But I’m a huge nerd for words, so it’s super interesting for me to find out that it’s also a word in the printing industry, and how that word is connected to the older meaning. etc. Yep, I said HUGE nerd.

I’m really glad you’re enjoying the serialized format! I love reading things in serialization too–It’s so much fun getting all excited for the next part, it feels like every chapter is a big event. And the format works really well for a story like Gauntlet that dumps an ordinary person in this bizarre place with layers and layers of secrets to figure out.

We’re all really glad that you’re enjoying Gauntlet!

Thanks for bringing that word to our attention! The word “foolscap” is a technically correct but old-fashioned spelling of “fool’s cap,” aka a jester hat (this definition has actually been dropped from some dictionaries, but is still listed in others: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/foolscap). Since Gauntlet is full of callbacks to fairy tales and classic literature, the old-fashioned word fits with the tone of the story. So, we’ll probably keep it as-is.

Thanks, guys! I LOVE reading all your theories! I’m trying really hard to find a way to respond that isn’t too spoilery…I’ll just say that there’s definitely some important stuff in Jamilah’s diaries, but we’re still very much in the setup phase of this story so you’re missing some big pieces of the puzzle.

And I start to like Janelle more too – like her liveliness, very well conveyed by the voice ^__^

I’m really glad you like her! Janelle’s a tricky character to write, and perform, and edit…she’s the kind of person who comes on really strong and takes things too personally sometimes, she yells when she should back off, she gets in fights where she isn’t necessarily in the right–she can be kind of a pain in the ass. But she genuinely cares about people, and most of the problems she has with other crew members come from caring too much or getting too involved too quickly. And she’s a lot of fun at a party…if it was even possible to have an on-ship party…

How does Rosa know it was a woman who killed him?

Keep in mind that Rosa’s an academic (read: nerd)–it’s pretty standard in academic and feminist writing for people to either use the pronoun that they identify with, or to just randomly switch between “he” and “she”, when they’re talking about a hypothetical person whose gender is unknown. Someone more casual probably would’ve used “they,” but Rosa doesn’t put up with that kind of shoddy grammar, dammit!

Seb is so cute, haha. Writing plays and watching artsy movies.

Seb hasn’t gotten to do much yet in the story, but he has a lot more lines in the next few chapters. That one line with the plot summary of the amazing movie he’s getting them to watch (He’s a reincarnation of James Joyce…) took about 20 minutes to get a clean recording of, because Adam (voice of Seb) and I both couldn’t stop laughing every time he tried to explain how great that movie is.

I wonder how big the database of movies is on the ship.

HUGE. The “internet” they use on the ship has to be the knowledge base for the colony for years to come (as far as they know, the only contact they’ll ever get from Earth will come at the extremely slow speed of other colony ships taking the same trip). So it’s the only source of education, history, technology, art, and entertainment they’ll have, at least until things are set up enough that they can start doing new research and creating new art. The film collection is as broad and inclusive as possible, though obviously there are some holes. Seb is in mourning for at least a few low-budget art films that weren’t deemed “important” enough to be archived on the ship, and that now he’ll never get to see again.

Will we ever get to see drawings of them? Or Bassil or Iya?

I don’t have any plans for art featuring any of the side characters. For the purposes of this story, there are only 6 people in the entire world, and anyone left at home or frozen in their pod doesn’t really seem “real,” no matter how beloved they are or how many times their videos get watched. But if anyone ever wants to try drawing them, I 100% approve!

I can show you an exclusive picture of what Jamilah looks like, though: http://sparklermonthly.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/08/Janelle_Site.png

Thanks for all the comments, guys!

Thanks for all the love, guys! I’m so glad people are enjoying Awake!

I think Rosa is forgetting something very important here.

Interesting! Keep in mind that Rosa’s main goal throughout the whole argument has basically nothing to do with finding a real solution to the mystery. She just wants them all to stop flipping out so nobody does anything stupid. Forensics isn’t her job–her job is to keep the rest of the crew physically and mentally together enough that the ship keeps running.

    I love Hina’s voice ^^

I know, right? Rielle is so freaking talented–we’re really lucky to have her!

what if someone wanted to be thought of dead, but wasn’t?

I don’t know, but Persephone is very helpful if you ask the right questions. :D

She could read him transcripts of famous comedy routines–without any emotion, expression or comic timing.

She probably also has access to a sound clip of a laugh track.

    This can only go poorly.
