I’ll get this started–One of the things I really enjoyed about re-reading/editing this chapter was that it’s a great reminder of how visually inventive Jen is. I love Vee’s weird ceremonial crown. I love Hellkite. I love the kind of fantasy-meets-Gothic & Lolita-fashion. :-D It just doesn’t look like anything else out there, which, as an editor, I always find exciting. Plus it’s extra fun to see it all in color!

It’s honestly been a while since I re-read the series, so I’m really looking forward to going through chapter-by-chapter and experiencing it all over again! (already digging into chapter 2!)

I’ve been watching Yona! :-D I actually edited NG Life, a really terrific little series from the same creator, as one of the final things I did at TOKYOPOP, and I’ve been a fan of hers ever since, so I was super excited to see that this was getting an adaptation. And I’m really enjoying it! I feel like it starts off a little slow (well, maybe not “slow,” since you get an assassination and major political upheaval in the first episode…but it takes a while to really hit its stride), but it’s got great production values, and it totally captures the author’s quirky sense of humor and interesting characterizations. :-) She uses a lot of shojo tropes and things we’re all familiar with as readers, but adds just enough of a spin on them to make them interesting. I dig it!

Oh man, I listened to this terrific This American Life episode yesterday (mostly to hear Lindy West talk to a guy who used to troll her), and there’s a section about the phenomena of vocal fry (and how it’s associated with young women, and how old people despise it), and now I can’t stop hearing it when I talk… oh well. :-) It just means I’m hip and cool, I guess!

But yeah, this was a fun one. (I need to stop swearing so much, though…)

Danielle is really spoiled for choice, right? ;-) How’s she gonna decide?!

I really love all of the costuming detail that Kosen put into this chapter. :-D Our story takes place about 50 years before Le Chevalier D’Eon (if I have my dates right), but I don’t think fancy dress changed all that much in the interim, so I can definitely see where you’d be getting that from. (Plus all those wigs really make people look the same…)

There’s definitely lots more exciting stuff on the horizon, so stay tuned!

You all should go check out our Membership Exclusive of the month, if you haven’t already. ;-)

LOOOOL! Uh. I totally wrote that pull quote back in the day. :-) It made sense to me!! I mean, there are so many things I love about Off*Beat, but how Jen handles the setting is a really big one, and since FAKE was popular at time, I thought it made a good contrast, including hinting at some of the BL elements in each series.

But yeah, you’re definitely not the only person who thought that line was an undersell… Oh well. Live and learn.

Many thanks to Team KaiJu for their assistance in toning this chapter! That was supposed to go in the space below the pages themselves, but I think it got lost in the shuffle with our new format this month. (Everybody go read “The Ring of Saturn” and “Mahou Josei Chimaka” once you’re through this chapter of Gatesmith!)

For anyone who’s curious/didn’t know, “la gazza” means “the magpie” in Italian. :-) Somebody obviously likes shiny things…

P.S. Yes, that’s definitely Dante from “Hungry.” Stay tuned for chapter 5 when Skye makes his appearance! ^_^

    Hi all,

I forget if Jen told me exactly how long it was between when Emile left and when Lu gets to town, but it’s definitely longer than you might think–Closer to years than months. (This will become more apparent in the next few chapters! ^_^ )

in reply to: Windrose: Chapter 3 discussion #11528

Aw, I’m sorry I missed this post for so long! Yes indeed, a major highlight of this series is everyone’s fabulous hair. :-D

BTW, not sure if you caught it, but the book that is Daniela’s prize is Don Quixote de la Mancha, the famous tale of another adventurer! Her father isn’t particularly subtle about encouraging her enthusiasm for travel and excitement, it seems. ^_^

Oh man, what a lovely thing to hear! Thanks for sharing (on both levels!), Olivia!

    *sniffle*

in reply to: Gatesmith: Chapter 4 discussion #8987

Yeah, we usually post the new threads while we’re still prepping the rest of the update (so we can link to them!). So if you’re being attentive, you can totally jump in on them ahead of the game to build extra excitement!

LOL–Lianne’s comment after finishing the proof for this chapter was, “Man, poor Emile didn’t even last 10 pages!” The body count in this series is a little intense… BUT, Lu appears in our Gatesmith promo art (in the back of Off*Beat 3!), so I think it’s safe to say we’ll be seeing more of her in the future! ^_^

in reply to: Mahou Josei Chimaka (including teaser!) #8986

OH MY GOD, I can’t believe I didn’t get the X-Files reference with Coyote Boulder! I though it was just a funny name! *editor fail*

BeBe’s young admirer has my favorite name of the bunch, actually. He’s Limon. :-) (Hence, “Lemon Drop.”)
