Of course! Exercises/prompts are great. We’ll probably be running contests for that sort of thing in the future, too.
Sure! We’re still trying to build a structured set of creative topics in the subscriber-only forums, but that may take awhile, and we certainly don’t want the only creative topics to be behind a paywall. Go for it, Neila!
Ha ha, I love how Capo makes this sound like a ShoujoHolics Anonymous meeting. Very accurate for some of us!
We’re really happy to see so many artists and writers as part of the Sparkler community, and we hope that means you’re pitching to us during open submissions, too! (I definitely recognized people from Twitter in the submissions pile.) We want this to be a place where people come to absorb cool media and hopefully find inspiration to make/perfect their own. And we know posting on forums can be nerve-wracking, even though as per our forum guidelines, we’re trying to keep this place a positive space. The contest is a way to reward people who take the time to come here and gather the courage to post, especially in these early days of the magazine.
I ran that Zenkaikon table, Danny, so I’m sure we’ve met. Nice to see you again!
Did you hear that sound, Caporushes? The sound of the FLOODGATES YOU JUST OPENED?
As Sparkler’s least classy editor, I dream about flooding this site with things that are Needlessly Hot.
SERIALS ARE THE BEST. <3 And you bring up a good point. I'll be sure to never say how many chapters Gauntlet is supposed to be. :)
Phew, trying to catch up in the forums here. (And in case you didn’t hear, we just announced our first forum contest. :D)
Welcome, Serene! I’ve seen you talk about us in the ANN forums and stuff, which is super nice of you. <3
Yeah, localization of Japanese light novels can get pricey, since the translation/editorial is so time-consuming. (Audio editor Rebecca and I both used to localize light novels for TOKYOPOP and, to a lesser extent, DMP.) It's not like creating an original light novel in English is cheaper, since we’re still paying people to write it and artists to illustrate it. *lol* But we get a completely original project in the end, which is what interests us at Sparkler. We love our localized manga, books, audio, and games, but we also want original stuff. Basically, we want more of everything. MOOOOOOOORE.
Welcome to the forums! *respectful business kisses*
Hey, Tacto! Sorry, I fiddled with your thread title and moved it to the top of the forum…we weren’t doing real forum links for TD (just open comments), but I think that’s confusing, so now we’re doing both, and I linked to this thread from the chapter itself.
Glad you liked the new section! Ever since we revealed Kado’s power in Chapter 3, I’ve been really squirmy, since that really wasn’t the whole story…and honestly, we’re just starting to get into poor Kado’s troubles, which run really deep. That gate metaphor has even more meanings, heh. You make a good point about Touya, since Kado’s been really tight-lipped about his time with the guy AND never fully explained what scared the crap out of him in the hospital bathroom. Now that Touya has specifically asked for him, that shit’s gonna hit the fan hard in the next update. SO HARD. I’m actually really excited for next month, because we’re trying to make it as explosive as possible. :D
Good timing–the final character designs actually came in last night, and they look awesome. We’ll post them with Chapter 2 on next Friday’s update. <3
Good guess, Courtney! I’ve been told that it’s okay to reveal that “Status 444” means “deceased.” But I’m not at liberty to say what “Code Green” means. :)
By all means, Sarah. We’re happy to have people introduce themselves here.
Ha ha! I know, with a thriller like this, it’s hard to wait a month for the next chapter. :) But I’ve already started editing Chapter 3, and it’s awesome – Ellery (the author) keeps switching up the challenges in front of Clio, and despite knowing what’s going to happen, I still end up surprised by the actual pages! It’s genuinely exciting. This book is so cool and we’re lucky to have it in our lineup. XD
Oh, and to clarify: the only “Chapter 2” that exists for comics right now is Off*Beat Chapter 2. Dire Hearts Chapter 2 hasn’t been released yet.
Hi, misscurlylove! We’re sorry to hear you’re having trouble!
I went and double-checked your subscription, and the stats tell me you have the access you paid for. I also went through the Off*Beat Chapter 2 links (both as an admin and through a dummy 1-month subscription), and everything seems to be working okay. I think the problem may be on your end–because each comic chapter loads very slowly (all pages basically load in the comic “clicker” viewer at once, so then you can swipe through the pages quickly), sometimes there’s a network hiccup or something where the pages won’t load. This sometimes happens to me if I’m on a phone in a bad network or something…basically, if that happens, just reload/refresh the page as you would with any slow-loading page that won’t load for whatever reason.
You can try again on this direct link to Off-Beat Chapter 2: http://sparklermonthly.com/comic_issue/offbeat-vol-1-chapter-2/
Please let us know if you’re still having trouble! We’ll fix this for you, I promise.
We’re glad you liked it! eprime has already written a lot more of the book, and it’s coming out awesome. Alice in Wonderland x Bioshock is a great way to describe it, ha ha.
You’re welcome! :D Honestly, a lot of us on staff couldn’t help but worry a little, too, since we’d built up this chapter for so long in our heads that we were afraid we were over-inflating it. But then we read the chapter and felt exactly the same as you. :) Jen really is a master.
A manga blogger did an advance review of it and said basically the same thing: http://mangabookshelf.com/41850/off-the-shelf-cats-rats-first-love/
