Sorry, guys, I’ve been really sick. I’d like to run a writing prompt here, but apparently there are some legal issues with fanfiction that Sparkler needs to sort out before we host any fanfiction on the official site. Nothing major, we just need a disclaimer or something and I haven’t had time to write one up.
However, if this is original fiction, no problem – you can do whatever you want now. It’s just fanfiction that we’ll do more formally later.
Because we love Neila and think this is a great idea, Sparkler will be running a raffle on February 1st for everyone who participates in this prompt. Just post your art here or post a link to your art here (if it’s hosted elsewhere, like on Tumblr), and your name goes in the raffle! Any free or paying subscriber to sparklermonthly.com can post in the forums, as you’ll see in our Welcome Post.
We’ll be pulling three winners from the raffle. If you’re one of the winners, you’ll receive your choice of one of the following:
1.) A free one-month subscription to Sparkler Monthly
2.) A free Sparkler Monthly ebook/mp3 set of your choice (Off*Beat Vol 1, Off*Beat Vol 2, Tokyo Demons Vol 1, or Tokyo Demons Audio Book 1, Part 1)
3.) A free button set from any of our series mailed directly to you: Off*Beat, Dire Hearts, Awake, Gauntlet, or Tokyo Demons
For those of you participating in our first posting contest, posts in this thread count toward your total posts. Remember, that contest ends in a week!BTW, I loooooove that picture of Rose, Neila. Your inking rocks.
Sorry, been sick this week. This looks AWESOME, Neila–I’ll add the raffle for all entries on your prompt thread. Nice work!
Yeah, we can find a third editor to break the tie. Don’t worry–it’s not a big time commitment, they can totally handle it.
But if you want to do an unofficial fanart prompt challenge to start with, that’s totally fine. We can still do the raffle for participating.
That’s true–we don’t want to limit the subjects of the art. In a perfect world, I’d like there to be open voting to the public, but systems like that tend to get skewed–either someone finds a way to vote a ton of times, or someone who has a lot of Facebook friends gets all of them to flood the polls. A single judge evens the playing field a bit.
What if we had Lillian, our head comics editor, pick the winner? Or our print designer/site designer, Lissa? (Lissa designs our covers, logos, etc. and designed the new version of the site.) They’re the “art” side of our editorial team. Actually, they could pick a winner together, to get rid of some of that “single judge” bias.
Hey, guys! This sounds really good. Editorial wanted a new contest for December, so we can set this up for you and offer prizes. (That way you can enter yourself, Neila! :D)
We can enter all participants into a raffle, then draw for a few participation prizes. And if this is fanart, we thought maybe the creator of the original work could pick the ultimate winner?
Keep up the great brainstorming!
November 17, 2013 at 10:28 pm in reply to: Reporting website bugs/problems, such as can't access certain pages #2323We definitely want to optimize this new site design for mobile. It’s top of our list once these bugs are fixed!
Yeah, we love 4-koma and hope to do more! Jen Quick has done awesome ones for Off*Beat (in the ebooks/paperbacks and on her deviantArt). And the Tokyo Demons ones were drawn by Romy-chan, who is AMAZING at chibis.
Speaking of which…Romy-chan has something awesome coming for the December issue. :D
November 16, 2013 at 2:15 am in reply to: Reporting website bugs/problems, such as can't access certain pages #2313Yeah, that was actually intentional; the link is behind the paywall, so subscribers can right-click and save if they want, or use the usual check-out system. Subscribers are entitled to either. :) That link will be eliminated and replaced with Bandcamp once the paywall is lifted in a week.
We’ll probably develop a cleaner system later, but some of our other options (like a built-in Sparkler player on the page) use Flash, which won’t work on a lot of devices. We’re trying to be as accessible as possible, especially for the beloved fans who give us their hard-earned money to get this content early! :)
November 13, 2013 at 1:15 pm in reply to: Reporting website bugs/problems, such as can't access certain pages #2273Restructured your post to make this the topic for all website problems/bug reports, Karen. Thank you!
Yeah, we’ve been having bizarre little bugs pop up since the new site layout was released, and it seems to be entirely the fault of the hosting company (including how long the fixes are taking). Our two web admins Jordan and Lissa have literally been working around the clock to debug and put in workarounds until the foundational errors are fixed, so if some pages vanish for a little while, I’m really sorry! They’ll be back up ASAP.
Between the Christy interview and the extras in the Off*Beat ebooks/paperbacks, our creators seem very happy to talk about their creative process. We’re hoping to do more of that in the future, preferably in a few different formats to keep things interesting. :)
Kelly, you’re from our Sleep is for the Weak days?! O.O I’m floored.
Character Q-and-A’s are actually pretty easy, if the creator is down with it. If the characters have voice actors (like in Tokyo Demons), we could even do it in audio form, too. Interesting idea! I didn’t know this was a thing. *lol*
Yay, gomidog is on the forums! I can’t wait until we make a CERTAIN AWESOME ANNOUNCEMENT about you. :) Very soon now.
Yeah, Tory’s book on dyslexia really opened my eyes, too. I know it’s made a splash in the educational market (school, libraries, etc.). She’s been fantastic on Awake. Working her butt off with the rest of the team! This project is extremely hard. :D

Glad to hear you’re working on an art job, Neila!
