@tacto – This is definitely the darkest arc in the series. :( And Touya has a past and his own problems, but that doesn’t negate the fact that he’s a monster. Hate away! A lot of Book 3 is about him, since – as we tried to show in the Prologue of Book 1 – Touya is sorta the third lead next to Ayase and Jo. Dude is fuuuuuuuucked up.
@Najela – We tried to have more love/sex in this issue, but all our stories are so freaking dark that it was almost immediately followed by horrible. *lol* Where’s the love? SLOPPILY CRYING IN THE CORNER.
I screamed in a good way! But don’t stay up, because tomorrow’s a triple update and thus the update will probably be in the nighttime (as we do final prepping of all material). Have a lovely Friday and there will be more Off*Beat before bed. <3
@animatorwannabe – Ah, I love it! The blushing! And the sexy glances, wowie. O.O
@sgl – Ha ha, like there was ever a question! Off*Beat charms anyone it touches.
Speaking of Off*Beat – I just copyedited the chapter going up tomorrow, and it MADE ME SCREAM. Also, I sent Jen Quick to this thread, and she’s been enjoying these Valentines immensely. Good work, guys!
MORE OFF*BEAT TOMORROW YEEEEEEEAH~!
I feel like, if I were Clio, I would still be DESPERATELY CLINGING to the idea that someone can be trusted in the Gauntlet, especially with the implication that most (all?) people aren’t there of their own volition…but damn, they’re all assholes! Except Britt? Maybe? And who knows where she is!
I would’ve been turned into a drooler long ago. :)
I like how 0% of the readership trusted August. *lol* Well, not like he was in Clio’s good graces for long. Just long enough to get a romp out of it. :(
We might be doing a different sort of contest for the magazine in March, but I fully encourage these prompts to keep going.
But that reminds me, guys – this might be the last time in a while that mere participation gets you into a raffle. Join in!
@neila – Yes, episodes of approx 20 minutes are ideal (15-25 min). We don’t have a preference re: the different types of settings that work for audio, so long as the setting does work well in audio and sets an interesting mood, if possible.
@okaykarendraw – Ooooooh, yes. The Sachi 18+ story was tricky to illustrate, since we didn’t want it to be, uh, shouta-esque? O.o But rem did a really, really awesome job, and somehow made it classy yet REALLY EFFECTIVE. The Sachi x Kado fans are gonna flip.
The Cherry Bomb logo was done by Lissa Pattillo, our web admin and top designer! We went through a million iterations, so she worked hard on that, ha ha. (She also did the logo for Sparkler, Gauntlet, Dead Endings, Awake…)
@scotty6000 – Right now, Cherry Bomb is only through our regular creators and a few additional people we specifically approached (like Spica). We have a very particular type of erotica in mind – stuff with context, feels, and a purpose (we’re avoiding PWP) – so we didn’t want to open up submissions until we published some stuff first and creators could “understand” what we’re looking for. But we’ll probably have some variation of open submissions for it later, yes.
@Najela – We’re not requiring sexy spin-offs from all our creators, but most of them have expressed an interest in doing something, so most of the series will probably have a Cherry Bomb piece(s) at some point.
Is there a particular series you guys really want smut from? If you ask, I can forward this thread to that creator. :3
Waaaaaah! It’s getting hot in this thread for Tory and Colin! *lol*
Thanks for posting this, wonder1440. Please tell Julia she did a great job! All those hearts covering the naughty bits, hahahahaha!
You’ve already given Gabriella a nickname! Love it. <3
Yeah, Dead Endings is interesting from page 1, but Chapters 3+ kick things into SUPER high gear. The later stuff is just...really intense and terrifying and awesome.
What a great suggestion, A.M. Funk! Thank you!
Najela: I think that kind of story would be fine in audio, we just aren’t interested in the premise. That stuff about betting on someone else’s V-card is also inappropriate for our magazine (not in terms of “too adult,” but “too non-con”).
Right now, we’re especially interested in audio dramas that would be 4-8 chapters long, 15-25 minutes each. Approx 1 page of script is 1 minute of audio. You can use Awake and its transcripts as guidance.
Pitching’s fun, but I should probably warn everybody now about the trap of the elevator pitch: it’s easy to get sidetracked by thinking up a million premises and how to market each, but we don’t need anything super complicated or jaw-dropping. We just want fun stories with some depth and originality, and a little spark to get people to try it. Think of the stories we have on Sparkler now – most of the premises are relatively simple. “Boy stalks his next-door neighbor.” “Girl is haunted by ghosts.” “Girl gets stuck in a labyrinth.” All of those premises have that spark – it’s not just about some random person living a random life, because there’s an interesting twist in each of their lives – and the creators spent all their time building really great stories and characters under those accessible, interesting ideas. A lot of the stories we’re running now were “old” ideas the creators had been mulling for years, and now we’ve helped them put it together and publish it. That raw passion is what we want. It’s easy to get so focused on marketing or pleasing your publisher that you stop putting your heart into your work.
In short – think of a premise that YOU care about, and you know you could put your heart into, because that’s the stuff we publish. And then give it just enough of a spark that someone other than you would pick it up. :)
Five-pm, that is SO cute! I love that you posted the old one as well, so we can see how you’ve improved as an artist over time. Great stuff! I love your attention to detail.
Gah, I love your coloring. Everything’s so cute and feminine, love love love.
As you probably noticed from our fiction, we have no problem with cursing! I guess if someone posted something that had really, really foul language for no reason, we might ask them to tone it down. We’re trying to keep this place 13+ friendly.
What we ACTUALLY don’t want is really offensive speech–so no slurs, threats, or especially insensitive references (like rape analogies). I know some Western otaku use a nasty term for male characters who dress like girls and can “pass”…maybe you know the term. Won’t be tolerated here because it’s extremely transphobic.
And thank you for participating, everyone! Would you mind if we archived these on sparklermonthly.com? I’d like to give them their own page as a gallery, and then tag each series so the gallery pops up under ‘Bonus’ listings for every series.
If you’d like to be included, please reply with what name you’d like to be credited under, and a link to whatever page you want (such as your portfolio page, your DA or Tumblr, etc.).
Thank you! And in case you missed it, Neila started another prompt for February, and we’ll be doing another raffle for that as well–February’s theme is Valentine’s Day cards! We all know those can range from super simple, to sexy, to funny, to full of puns. I’M HOPING FOR A LOT OF PUNS. <3
Sorry, never commented on Five’s piece–I really, really like it. REALLY like it. I love Mandy, and both your coloring and attention to detail are fantastic in this. That’s a great background, too, and those can be really tough and time-consuming! Fantastic work. <3
OH MY GOD. HINA HAS SPACE PANTS.
