I was interested to see Moss described as aromantic. I had assumed he just Had Issues (not to say that he doesn’t >_>) but I hadn’t considered his apprehension toward Marko as something more innate. It’s always good to see less mainstream sexual identities being portrayed! I’m rooting for them to work out, but atypical relationships require communication, something Moss is pretty terrible at…

@sgl Cool! I think I’ve seen the blind box ones at a Barnes & Noble. My girlfriend loves unicorns, so I might make her one as a gift. It won’t look nearly as good as yours, though! I like how you’ve got a whole story worked out for them. It sounds pretty dramatic!

I’m liking the flashbacks to little Daniela, and how she’s always been a little adventuring detective. Also, I’m super jealous of everyone’s hair.

I liked this story. You did a good job of portraying Nel as somebody who has the kind of righteous anger to go after a criminal but isn’t mentally prepared for the consequences. The opening paragraph sets the scene well, and the agent in the restaurant was good for planting seeds for future stories in the same universe. It was just vague enough to go a lot of different ways. And I love a good pun, so the title was clever and appropriate.

My only negative comment is that the part at the end where Nel Read Amber’s DNA and knew they were distantly related seemed a little out of nowhere. Obviously Reading is part of the titular “RW,” but that use only come up prominently in the last few sentences. It could have used a prior reference, like maybe it was how Nel was able to find Asshole. Maybe she somehow got his DNA, but only enough to Read a basic physical description, and had to track Asshole based on that. It makes sense that she knows enough of her own DNA to recognize it in others, but Reading others would probably be less exact. This story goes more psychological than detective story though, but it’s something to think about.

Maybe the Powers That Be could post a pdf flyer for fans to print off and hand out at conventions where there isn’t an official presence. It could include a link/QR code for the year one sampler, or maybe a promo code?

@liannesentar I’ve got 6 to 8 players, with three or four in each game. I’ve been playing with some of them for a few years, so we’ve got this whole little universe set up with lots of in-references and history and relatives of other characters. We even have a little wiki, that we all swear we will write more content for some day!

@sgl That is a super cute unicorn! How did you make that?

I am 100% down for this series. The title alone makes me want it. I kind of like magical girl series but they tend to be repetitive and deal with the same themes. A magical woman series has promise though. A character who has grown up with the job, maybe missed out on a lot because of it. And maybe some not entirely chaste romance? I’m really looking forward to it regardless.

Also, more work from KaiJu and and adorable little winged snake. Yay!

Anime-wise I’m keeping up with a few shows this season. Fate/stay Night is the most impressive so far. I’m not entirely sure what’s going on, but it’s darn pretty to look at. Parasyte is creepy but it’s getting pretty suspenseful with the most recent episode. RWBY isn’t an anime, but it’s still on Crunchyroll, and for all its cliche it has some awesome action scenes.

I also just picked up the complete series of Steins;Gate. I’m only a few episodes in, but I like it so far. “Low” science fiction isn’t that common in anime to my knowledge, so I’m enjoying it just for that. Plus I’m a big fan of the lead actor in the English dub, so it’s fun listening to him play mad scientist.

I’m reading Summer & Bird by Katherine Catmull. It’s kind of a YA fantasy mystery thing, a random pick from a public book fair. I’m only a few chapters in, but I love the writing style. It’s kind of sparse and full of mystery. The last chapter I read really made me want to write something. A small passage:

The Puppeteer was full of dead birds.
We call her the Puppeteer, but birds call her the Bird Eater, or the Mask. They fear her. She was a dancer and a puppeteer – not in Down, in Up, the real world, as you might think of it. She made bird puppets to use in her dances, tiny, delicate things in brilliant colors. Your eye made a trail behind them, a smear of ruby or cerulean in the air like a long tail, because you couldn’t bear to let the lovely color go.

Video game wise I’m alternating between Smash Bros. and Bravely Default. I won’t spoil Bravely Default, but if you’ve played it, I just started Chapter 6. Let’s hope third time’s the charm…

I don’t really have any artistic talent or crafts. I’m a decent singer though, and a pretty good cook. I’m kind of a writer, in that I run two Dungeons & Dragons games. Collaborative storytelling is still storytelling!

I don’t have much to say either, but I can offer fawning praise! Ms. Grunigen does a great job of capturing the different voices and outlooks of the characters, especially since they are both so different. Moss’s POV is morose and self-conscious, while Phoenix is vivacious and outwardly focused. I’m kind of wondering where the story is headed, but I also like it as kind of a slice-of-life cyberpunk fantasy thing.

I just got caught up as well, and I love how well written this story is. Like you said, you write about a lot of sensory experiences and that really helps build an atmosphere and make the setting come to life. Also, I totally ship the angels too.

The “enemy pairs” thing with and the supernatural beings spreading hope or despair to humans is really cool. I’m kind of tempted to borrow it for a Dungeons & Dragons game sometime. With credit after the reveal, of course ^_^

    From five-pm

The way Robbie (and Rosa) did it is like what they did to Jamilah all over again. It might be hypocritical if Hina complained about not being asked first, given what she did for her fiancé, but Robbie himself is upset that no one ever asked him if he wanted to go to Tau Ceti Prime so it’s not like he doesn’t understand that she probably would have liked for them to have asked for her opinion/consent. But it’s in character and understandable that they did not discuss it and, of course, this way it`s more interesting – with the intrigue kept until the very end – and more powerful an ending.

I agree that it seems a bit hypocritical, but definitely in character for Robbie. But since Hina fought so hard to get Basil’s years transferred I can’t imagine Rosa would have let another transfer go by easily. They must have had an “off air” discussion where Hina agreed, because they wouldn’t be able to get Hina back to her pod without her being… awake. B)

Wait, what? Things just got weirder. And surreal. I am really eager for more now…

Also, this might be a good opportunity to learn about skinwalkers. I’m only vaguely familiar with them (through The Dresden Files), but I love mythologies.

I’ll add to the recommendation of Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun. I came for the jabs at shojo manga tropes, I stayed for the excellent comic timing and sensibility.

I recently picked up Right Stuf’s rescue of the late 90s girl’s baseball anime, Princess Nine. It’s pretty cheesy sometimes, and the main romantic interest is annoying, but I like how the girls all interact and become friends. I have zero interest in real sports played by by real humans, but I really liked it.
