Brrr!

The days are getting shorter and it’s starting to feel like winter outside, but we’ve got plenty of sizzling stuff this month to keep you warm, first and foremost being an amazing, fiery cover by the fantastic Asia Kendrick-Horton. Things are going to heat up in Skyglass Chapter 6 this month, but Phoenix is always smokin’. *wink wonk*

Gatesmith and Dusk in Kalevia are both taking a month off, but our line-up this month is still super exciting. We’ve got a thrilling new installment of Windrose, the dramatic next section of Tokyo Demons Vol. 3, the start of the brand-new mini-series For Peace from Dinner Ditz‘s Alexis Cooke (featuring lady truckers in loooove!), plus a teaser of a new KaiJu magical-woman mini-series that will launch in our December issue: Mahou Josei Chimaka!

That’s to say nothing of DNA-RW, a dark prose short by two creators we’re happy to welcome to Sparkler: Sarah “Neila” Elkins of Here There Be Monsters, and Ru Xu of Saint for Rent! Nel has an unusual ability–she can copy DNA and rewrite her own DNA to match it. When she decides to use this shape-shifting skill to help find a serial kidnapper, she swiftly finds herself in over her(?) head.

And last but certainly not least, our Member Exclusive of the month will be a behind-the-scenes chat with the actors from Awake, our first original audio drama! Stay tuned for that in Week 3 this month. ^_^ It’s to celebrate the release of the complete Awake series set coming to the Sparkler Shop in Week 4. And speaking of the shop, we recently released a limited run of Sparkler mini sketchbooks that are available now!

BTW, if you don’t follow our Tumblr or Facebook, you might have missed that we’ve got a bunch of our comics up on Comixology now, if you like reading things that way. (I know I do! The Ring of Saturn looks particularly great on my tablet. ;-) And if you’re looking for the perfect ebook to curl up with on a gloomy day with your hot beverage of choice, Dead Endings is now up and available in a new complete edition (with a bonus story!) from our shop, or via Amazon!

In other news, Gauntlet has been sent to press, and Tokyo Demons vol. 2 isn’t far behind! We should have those available in spiffy print editions for all your holiday shopping needs before too long. <3

Get your creepy on!

Happy Halloween, Sparkler Fans! The days are getting shorter and leaves are falling from the trees outside my apartment, so it’s time to snuggle up with some new content from Sparkler! (Los Angeles is currently having a major heat-wave, so it’s not exactly snuggling weather, but it’s the thought that counts, right?)

This month marks the return of Tokyo Demons and the start of Volume 3 of the series, so we decided to go extra-creepy on this cover by featuring everyone’s favorite massively unhealthy relationship, Touya and Kado! Bad touch, Touya, bad touch.

We also get a solid dose of the supernatural with the latest installment of Gatesmith, plus the tension ramps up and clothes are lost in Dusk in Kalevia, while in Skyglass, Moss (thanks to Phoenix) makes a breakthrough–kicking and screaming, no less!

Windrose is on break this month, as Studio Kosen prepares for a big month of travel, but we’ll see chapter 3 of the series in November, along with some exciting new additions to our comics library. In the meantime, Alexis Cooke is drawing us a terrific Dinner Ditz short comic for our member exclusive of the month–that’s coming in Week 3, and it’s going to be a real treat! In Week 4, we fill the last slot of this issue with more Tokyo Demons: the reader-prompted AU short Fukuhashi Fight Club.

In other news, our Membership Drive is still ongoing, as we aim for the next raffle at 200 members. Keep up the great work helping us get the word out, friends! (Like Coco, who’s running her own Sparkler raffle in October!)

And we now have lovely digital copies of Dead Endings, and Tokyo Demons Vol 2 up in the Sparkler shop–buy them and you get additional never-before-seen bonus material. And Before You Go is also available to readers through Comixology now, if you’re curious to try it out in a different electronic medium!

Tokyo Demons 2 ebook (complete) in the Shop!

shop-tokyodemons

The complete Tokyo Demons Book 2: Add a Little Chaos ebook–featuring revised text from the online serialization, new illustrations from Romy-chan, and two bonus short stories (one about Adam, one about Nick x Hatsumi), the latter of which is not available online–is now available in the Sparkler Shop! If you were one of the Kickstarter supporters or Book 2 subscribers entitled to this, check your inbox! You should have a download link waiting for you right now. <3 A paperback version will be arriving in the next few months.

Book 3 will begin in a few weeks, in the October issue (Issue #015) of Sparkler Monthly!

If that’s not enough Tokyo Demons for you, don’t forget that Cherry Bomb has three exclusive short stories as well: Building Up (Ayase x Kiyoshi), Once & Never Again (Sachi x Kado), and the post-Book 2 Save Me/Don’t Save Me (Kado x Sachi). That last one has been very popular. :)

Sparkler Survey Interview: $10 coupon + raffle

This survey is now FULL and will not be taking any more participants. If you’ve signed up, you’ll be contacted this week about scheduling your interview. Thank you!

Are you a Sparkler reader? Would you be willing to answer some questions about your Sparkler experience (how you use the website, what you like or don’t like) to help us improve our magazine? Every participant earns a $10 credit to our shop and will be entered in a raffle to win 3 Sparkler paperbacks! (Sparkler Distro products not included for credit or raffle.)

We’re looking for 15-20 people to do an interview over Skype or GChat (either typed or voice) in the month of September. Interviews will take approximately 30 minutes–unless you have a lot you want to say, of course!–and will be scheduled according to your convenience, any time of day or night. Your feedback will be kept anonymous and your voice (if you do voice chat) will not be recorded. At the completion of the interview, you’ll receive your $10 credit to our company’s products in the Sparkler Shop and will be entered into a raffle along with the other participants. The winner of the raffle will receive 3 paperbacks of her choice, shipped right to her home for free.

If you’d like to participate, please fill out the form with your name (or online handle), an email we can reach you at, and a time that’s generally good for you (weekday evenings, weekends, middle of the night, etc.). A staff member will contact you shortly to schedule a time for your interview.

Back to School with Sparkler!

It’s the end of summer, much to our dismay, but you can start the school year off right with some fine original fiction from Sparkler! This month we have the second installments of our two new comics series, Gatesmith and Windrose, plus things get even messier in Kalevia, Phoenix tries her hand at something ambitious in Skyglass…and we reach the emotional finale of Awake!

Our subscriber exclusive for the month will be a podcast with Off*Beat and Gatesmith creator Jen Lee Quick—we’re recording it next weekend, so please feel free to send us your questions for Jen via social media (Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, take your pick!) so we can include them in the podcast!

Plus, Gauntlet is now available as an ebook in our Shop—print version coming soon! And later this month, we’ll get the ebook of both Tokyo Demons: Book 2 and Dead Endings!

And thanks so much for your support so far in getting the word out about our Membership Drive! Your help here is invaluable. Keep up the great work on your end, and we’ll be able to provide you with even more great content on our end. As always, your feedback is very welcome as well–this is the second month where we’re releasing all our content at once (minus the member exclusive, which comes on the third Monday of the month), and we’re curious to see what you all think! Plus, we’ve changed our member downloads to have all comics and all prose in a single file (or one giant PDF!), and “series-so-far” downloads for individual series for VIP members. Is this something you’re all using? Are you enjoying it? Let us know what you think and how we can make your experience with Sparkler easier and ever more enjoyable!

Membership Drive for Sparkler Monthly: Year 2

Membership Drive for Sparkler Monthly: Year 2Hey, readers and listeners!

What a ride it’s been. As you probably saw from the Year 1 Sampler Issue – and newbies, you can download that for free right now to try us out – in our inaugural year, we started, continued, or completed twelve different series, not including our one-shots (both comics and prose), our many Member Exclusives, and the Cherry Bomb imprint. We ran several rounds of open submissions and partnered up with a bunch of other fantastic creators in the Sparkler Distro program. Our goal was never just to publish great stories – it was to inject more fem-positive fiction into the industry, to offer jobs (and advances) to talented creators both seasoned and brand-new, and to help foster a community of inclusive creativity.

But beyond those ideals, we wanted to make a place where everyone could have fun. Taking cues from shojo magazines in Japan with their seasonal delights, talent contests, and waves of new content wrapped up in a neat package, our digital format let us play with different mediums and interactivity while plucking talent from all over the globe. We get to scout creators from our favorite fanfiction communities and Tumblr, for crying out loud. And we’ve been taking the opportunity to embrace our fujoshi ways and listen to your requests and just…offer you a ton of weird, wild, wonderful stuff.

The good news is, all of this was designed around a single goal: if we sold memberships at $5/month, this entire magazine and the rest of the company could comfortably operate on 2,000 subscriptions. We only need 2,000 people on the planet to give us $5 a month to sustain this magazine and keep those jobs open, those books and CDs coming, the community thriving.

The bad news is: on our best month of Year 1, we barely broke 100 members.

If we can’t get at least 1,000 people to dedicate that $5/month to us by the end of Year 2 – July 2015 – there will be no Year 3. We know we can do it, but we need your help!

To sweeten the deal, we’ve restructured a few things:

Monthly Memberships

member_monthly

These are still at the price of $5/month, even though a 1-month alone is now $7. Get your constant, all-you-can read pass to all of our series and Exclusives, plus a download of the current issue. Buy now!

Year+ Memberships

member_year

These will now be $50 for 12 months (instead of $60), plus a free ebook from our shop (not including Sparkler Distro titles). If you’re already a Year+ Member from before now, you’re also getting that free ebook as thanks for supporting us in our first year. Buy now!

V.I.P. Memberships

member_VIP

For those of you who want convenient downloads of our current series and all archived Member Exclusives, and all our Cherry Bomb titles at no extra cost! (See all downloads here.) Series files will be updated every month with the new chapters, so you can just delete your old version and replace it with the bigger version to keep your e-reader neat. This membership costs $15 for the first month, and $10 for each additional month – or $125 up-front for the year. And since you’re paying the VIP rate instead of the standard rate, you’ll count as two people in our tally toward 2,000 members. Buy now!

And right now we’re running a Membership Drive (see below) with new bonuses and prizes for every goal we reach. So you’re not just keeping this magazine running – you’re also unlocking new goodies along the way.

*One-month “Trial” memberships (now $7) are a great way to explore our magazine, but are not included into the totals and promotions below – because although we’re grateful for any sale, it’s the committed memberships that will keep this magazine afloat. But every Monthly and Year+ members will count in the tally below, and VIP Members will count twice!

Congratulations to caporushes, the winner of our first Prize Pack raffle!

200 Members

200 Members – When we reach this milestone, all members (except caporushes) will have their names thrown into a raffle, and VIP members will have their names thrown in twice. Five lucky winners will be sent a Sparkler Prize package in the mail: which includes a selection of our paperbacks, zines, merch, sparkly things, and candy. Because you should be eating candy while digging through that. See sample pic below!

(The pocket sketchbook in the bottom right is a new Sparkler product; winner may receive a different design.)

300 Members

300 Members – The incredible rem is going to design a sexy Tokyo Demons bishonen dakimakura (NSFW link) for ages 16 and up. Yes, we’re doing a sexy body pillow case, because fujoshi. You’ll also get to vote which dude from Tokyo Demons is going on there and what outfit he’ll be falling out of, within good taste. Maybe that police cosplay from the jewelry store heist in Book 2.

500 Members

500 Members – Off*Beat comes back…with an all-new short story in audio drama format. YOU HEARD ME. Jen Lee Quick will be working with our audio department to write the story and help cast the actors. YOU WANT THIS.

1000 Members

1000 Members – For Year 2, the magazine has 5 chapter slots for each issue, and most of them are already filled up with our current series, shorts, and other upcoming works we have from the last submission rounds. We’re opening submissions again soon, but it will be very limited, since so few jobs are left. But if we hit 1,000 members, we’re opening up a 6th slot in the magazine so we can run more content. That means more stories and more jobs. We really want to do this, because we’ve seen such incredible work submitted and we want to publish more of you.

1,500 Members

1,500 Members – We go from 6 slots to 7 slots. Every issue of Sparkler will run 7 chapters. More jobs, more series, more shorts. More excellence.

2,000 Members

2,000 Members – We’ve been quietly working on Sparkler video games for over a year. (Mostly visual novels with a romantic bent, like the stuff from Date Nighto.) But until the magazine is self-sustaining, we can’t dedicate the time to making those games happen, even though we already have an extended staff waiting in the wings. If we hit 2,000 Members, the magazine can keep running…and the Sparkler Video Game department opens up to fulfill your fujoshi gamer needs. Don’t forget that lijakaca is on our staff. She’s an expert on these things.

We’ll be updating this page weekly with the tally of our active members. Please be one of them and help us reach these goals.

We’re extremely proud of our creators and support staff – their hard work has resulted in a great magazine and a ton of great books and audio dramas over the last year. Now we need you to keep this going and to make Sparkler even more awesome.

Sampler Issue and News From Sparkler!

Greetings, readers and listeners! We are making some changes with our release format this month, since August marks the start of Year 2 of the magazine (OMG!!!)–as of this update, we’re switching from releasing new chapters starting on the first Friday of every month to releasing the ENTIRE month’s worth of chapters on the first Monday. Thus, our August issue will officially launch on August 4th. But in the meantime, we didn’t want to just leave you bereft! So now you get a few days of our Year 1 Sampler Issue gracing the front page of the site.

It’s been an exciting first year for all of us, as we reached the long-awaited conclusion of Jen Lee Quick’s comics series Off*Beat, launched a bunch of new series (including the completely original audio drama Awake), and found some amazing new talent through our open submissions. It was great to sit down to create the PDF sampler which is available for free download, and in the process look back at everything we’ve accomplished in the last twelve months. We’re proud to have these chapters represent us as a company–we fully believe that they demonstrate our commitment to engrossing and entertaining stories from a variety of incredible creative voices.

This issue, and the corresponding PDF download, represents just a smidgen of the hard work that our incredibly talented creators (and our tireless staff and freelancers!) have put in over the past year. It’s been so thrilling to go on this ride along with them, and I am confident that Year 2 will be even better. In that vein, chapter 1 of all of our series (comics, audio and prose!), including our two multi-chapter comics shorts, are offered for free as an easy way for us to share Sparkler with new friends and fans. On August 4th, we’ll have a new issue up on the main page, but the sampler will remain in the Issues section, and will continue to be free to access and download for all newbies.

As always, we thank you for your support and value your feedback. Every membership sold helps us pay our creators advances and release even more exciting content, so if you like what you see, please consider becoming a part of the Sparkler community and making Year 2 even better!

Sincerely,
The Sparkler Monthly Team

Happy Indie Publish–er…Independence Day!

Happy Independent Publishing Compan–I mean… Happy Independence Day, America!

And a belated Happy Canada Day to our friends (and co-founders) up North. I’m celebrating the holidays by going to Anime Expo. ^_^ Nothing says FREEDOM like a zillion cosplayers and a bustling Artist’s Alley!

This month we are thrilled to announce the premiere of our newest comic serial, Windrose, by creative team Studio Kosen! We’ve been huge fans of Kosen’s work for ages, and this we can’t wait to share this swashbuckling tale of 17th Century romance and mystery with you all.

Also this month, rockers rock out in Skyglass, Cailen finds the killer in Dead Endings, rival angels come face to face in Kalevia, and Miriam goes stargazing in “The Ring of Saturn.” We’re also excited to welcome Little Foolery paperbacks into the Sparkler Shop, along with new ebook products for our short stories! From July, the climactic Awake Chap 9 is now free to stream, and did you check our the surprise continuation of Tokyo Demons: Book 2? :)

Plus, you have until Sunday morning, July 6th to send the Sparkler staff your questions for our latest Sparkler Podcast–which will be this month’s Subscriber Exclusive. Tell us what you’ve been dying to know, and we’ll do our best to answer in entertaining and original ways! Submit your questions now on Tumblr or Facebook or email your questions to manager@chromaticpress.com.

As longtime Sailor Moonies who are insanely excited about Sailor Moon Crystal‘s debut, we launched our Sparkler Blog today to discuss how Sailor Moon influenced our fujoshi editors. And if you’re at Connecticon this month, come see Dusk in Kalevia author Emily Compton and Sparkler editors Lianne and Rebecca on the Writing Fiction through the Female Gaze panel at 5 pm on Friday (July 11).

Thanks again for all your support in June! We got a ton of great entries for the Sparkler Share Your World contest (we’ll be announcing the winners soon!), and with your help, reblogs and Facebook shares, we completed our Kickstarter for a print-run of Gauntlet. We’ll be sending that to the printer shortly, with Tokyo Demons Volume 2 joining it soon after.

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost a year since we officially launched Sparkler Monthly… We’ve learned a ton and had a great time working with some amazingly talented creators, and we’re going to be putting some of our hard-won knowledge into action next month with a few changes to the site and our format. More details will be coming soon, but we’re looking forward to heading into Sparkler Year 2 with new energy and a whole lot of great stories to excite and inspire!

June is Bustin’ Out All Over!

What a month, guys!

We’ve just released the mind-bending conclusion of Gauntlet (with no paywall), wherein Clio finally figures out how to escape from the bizarre maze in which she’s been trapped…but what does leaving really mean?

On that note, we’re running a Gauntlet paperback Kickstarter to give you the opportunity to pre-order our first complete Sparkler original prose story, plus snag some great bonuses at the same time! If you’d like a hard copy of this awesome novel to go on your bookshelf, help us out and spread the word. And to help support the Kickstarter, *all* of Gauntlet will be out from behind the paywall this month, just to whet your appetite! Which makes this a great time to share the series with any friends who may be intrigued by the story, but don’t have a Sparkler subscription to read all the back issues. ;-)

Speaking of sharing fun stuff with friends, don’t forget about our Sparkler Share Your World contest, which ends on June 3oth! Check out our great entries so far on the Sparkler Monthly tumblr (all tagged “submissions”), and consider sending us an entry of your own! Our top prize includes cash, so it’s a great way to fund some summer fun.

And as one series ends, another begins. This month we launch Skyglass, a brand new prose series by Jenn Grunigan with illustrations by the amazing Mookie. With an eye-searingly awesome cover spot this month, Skyglass is going to knock everyone’s socks off. Featuring space elves, pop stars, and fire elementals, Skyglass is an amazing addition to the Sparkler line-up (although some of you careful readers may have enjoyed our little sneak preview in “Cinderseed” a few months back!). Get ready for a tale that’s out of this world! (Albeit still set on Earth…)

That’s not all we’ve got this month, either! Starting in two weeks is the first installment of a three-chapter short comic from KAIJU. “The Ring of Saturn” is set in a private girls’ school in Great Britain at the outset of World War I. Starring Miriam, a young pianist who excels at playing exciting pieces but struggles with more reflective works, it has the honor of almost certainly being the first comic to feature Gustav Holst. :D Music is one of the hardest things to convey in visual media, and these ladies are really knocking it out of the park on that front. Can’t wait to share it with you all!

Our audio department head Rebecca’s got her hands full in June, with two audio updates and a Sparkler School audio drama how-to as our Subscriber Exclusive for the month. The true story behind the dead body(!) is in the latest installment of Awake, and we reach the exciting finale of Tokyo Demons Audio!

From last month, the adorable comic Dinner Ditz Part 2 (final) is free to read for a limited time, and the Off*Beat Volume 3 ebook will be available in our shop in a matter of days!

May Things Be Awesome

It seems like every month is a busy month for us at Sparkler, but this May is extra exciting! And I’m not just saying that because of the super-hot cover art we got this month from the always-amazing HamletMachine (NSFW) of Starfighter! *huff huff*

First up, a good portion of our crew will be at the Toronto Comics and Arts Festival (TCAF) on May 10th and 11th, with books and merch to sell, plus print copies of our two latest short comics, Before You Go, and Dinner Ditz! Creators Denise Schroeder and Alexis Cooke will be there as well, so stop by our booth and maybe you can get them to sign a book or two for you! The festival is free to enter, so if you’re in the area, we hope you stop on by. (It’s a fabulous event, not just because of Sparkler’s participation! ^_^)

We’re also pleased to announce that we’re running a contest for the next two months that we’re calling Sparkler Share Your World:

sparklershareyourworld-contest

Primarily hosted on our tumblr, we want you to send us artistic depictions (illustrations, comics, songs, stories, you’ve got a lot of options!) of how you share the stories you love with the people you love–for a chance to win a little corner of the internets, plus some pretty swank prizes (including cash!). You can find all the relevant details here, or on the Sparkler Monthly tumblr! You have until June 30th to get your entries in, and we can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

(Speaking of contests, congrats to Petrograd, Christian B., and Marina S. for winning wonder1440’s Off*Beat contest!)

And that’s not even counting all the great new content we’ve got for you this month! The second chapter and conclusion of Dinner Ditz will go up after TCAF (so attendees will get to read the exciting end first!), there’s crazy stuff going on in Dead Endings, a key part of the mystery unravels in Awake, Gauntlet heads for the finish line, the plot thickens in Kalevia, and last, but certainly not least…it’s the exciting finale of Tokyo Demons, Book 2! Whoa, how’d we get here already?! And what will happen to our heroes next?!

Plus, our Subscriber Exclusive for May is the first episode of our new Sparkler Podcast, featuring all the Sparkler team talking about our backgrounds, our goals, and just shooting the breeze about fun, exciting, female-oriented content!

We hope you enjoy!

Contest: Share Your World

sparklershareyourworld-contest

(Hosted on the Sparkler Monthly Tumblr!)

We here at Sparkler Monthly believe in the power of getting lost in the worlds of stories we adore – and what’s cooler than inviting other people to share those worlds? Whether it’s loaning your favorite book to a close friend or inviting your buddies over to marathon that amazing new show, you’re inviting other people into your heart.

How do you share your world? Draw us a picture (or a mini-comic!), write a short story or poem, or maybe even make us a song or a video about the ways that you share beloved stories with beloved people. Don’t want to recreate yourself or other people you know? Feel free to use your original characters! (No fanart without the creator’s permission, please.)

The Sparkler editors will be awarding prizes to our favorite entries, judged on creativity, skill, and FEELS. The top prizes include cash, paperbacks, and subscriptions to our magazine!

Submit your entry via the Submit Link on the Sparkler Monthly Tumblr – we will reblog the entries that follow all the contest rules (so make sure you read below!):

Contest terms and conditions:

-Entries will be accepted until 11:59 P.M EST, June 30th, 2014.

-Include a name and contact that you’re okay with us posting (and a link for your characters, if they’re from your webcomic or something and you want other people to check it out). If you want your public credit to be anonymous, just mention that and let us know how we can contact you if you win.

-Only one entry per person.

You will retain all the rights to your work – we only reserve the right to share it on social media (with your credit) and feature the winners on our site.

-Employees or freelancers who work for Sparkler Monthly or Chromatic Press are not eligible for the prizes, although we’re happy to have them participate. We are open to submissions from all over the world!

-We have the right to not reblog submissions for content reasons.

-We’ll accept drawings, short comics, photographed crafts, music, and videos, as well as short stories and poems of 500 words or less. We picked the illustration above, drawn by Onorobo for Emily Compton‘s Dusk in Kalevia, as a great example of the kind of thing we’d love to see!

Prizes:

1st prize: US$200 cash prize, a year-long subscription to Sparkler Monthly, a one-month gift subscription to the friend of your choice, and your entry will be featured on the Sparkler Monthly site.

2nd prize: A year-long subscription to Sparkler, any three (3) paperbacks from our store (excluding Sparkler Distro), and your entry featured on the Sparkler site.

The End of Off*Beat

Sparkler update: The end of Off*Beat!

This is it–after years and years of waiting, the final chapter of Off*Beat is up on the site now! We can hardly believe it’s over–after waiting for an ending for so long, wanting to see things finally get resolved for Tory and Colin…at least 50% of the Sparkler staff has been reduced to tears this week.

*sniff*

Anyway! Are you already a Sparkler subscriber? You can read the final chapter right here, right now.

Or, if you were waiting for the series to be over before reading, head to the series page to start from the beginning.

Not yet a subscriber? You can fix that right here!

Plus, we’re currently taking preorders for the print version of Off*Beat volume 3! There’s still a lot of work to be done before we have the finished paperback in hand, but if you’d like to buy it now and then get a sweet surprise in the mail in early July, you can use the links below.

Volume 3 alone

The complete series (books 1-3)

Both the single book and the set can be bought alone, or in a special deluxe edition with a keychain, postcard, new buttons, etc.

We’ve also extended the deadline on the big Off*Beat contest to the end of April! Read about it here.

Thank you SO MUCH to all the fans who’ve made this possible. Getting to rescue a series that we all love so much, that never got an ending–it’s been such an incredible experience, and we couldn’t have done it without the support of so many great Off*Beat fans who wanted to read the ending just as much as we did.

Anyway, once you manage to tear yourself away from Off*Beat, we’ve got another great update for you–Dusk in Kalevia volume 4 is up for subscribers!

And last week’s chapter of Dead Endings is now free to read for a limited time.

Thanks guys, and we hope you enjoy the ending :D

End of an Era

Jeez… It honestly feels a little surreal, but this month brings the long-awaited end of Off*Beat. The second half of Off*Beat Chapter 18, plus a short epilogue, goes up on April 18th, and then that’s it! I’ll talk more about this in other venues this month (i.e. tumblr), but it’s going to be almost exactly 10 years since Off*Beat officially started production (it was one of the first things I worked on at TOKYOPOP), and now we’re finally getting to the finale. *wipes away a tear* Jen and I are both really excited to bring you the conclusion to this series, but it’s a little sad to see it go! But fear not, there’s definitely more from Jen on the horizon…

Anyway, in honor of the end of an era, we’ve got a great Off*Beat contest running, courtesy of superfan  wonder1440! Test your knowledge and win a Sparkler Monthly subscription! (Which will be added to your current subscription if you’re already a subscriber, of course!)

Mind you, there are plenty of new things springing up around here as well! We’ve got a new short story in the comics department–Alexis Cooke channels some quality josei vibes in Dinner Ditz, which was described internally as “SO F#&%ING CUTE.” Plus we’ve got some sexy lady pin-ups coming from the amazing rem as our subscriber exclusive this month, and your regularly scheduled updates of Dusk in Kalevia and Tokyo Demons Audio.

But I’m personally extra excited about a double-dose of Dead Endings, with a chapter in Week 2 and Week 4 of the month!  If you haven’t checked out this fabulous, hilarious, and deeply creepy NYC ghost story, this is a great time to jump on board!

Spring is in full bloom, and we here at Sparkler are happy to watch all our various series grow and flourish along with it!

March-ing Onward!

Here at Sparkler we like to think that March not only comes in like a lion, but it goes out with a roar! We’ve got some really exciting stuff coming up all month, so there’s a lot to look forward to, not in the least because we’re officially getting close to the grand finale of not one, but TWO Sparkler series. This month we’ve got the almost-penultimate chapter of Gauntlet–and in honor of our first Sparkler-original prose series wrapping up, ALL back chapters of Gauntlet will be out from behind the paywall for the next two weeks!

And as hard as it is to believe, we’re actually getting to the long-awaited conclusion of Off*Beat! This month will feature the first half of Chapter 18, which means next month we’ll be finishing up the series with the second half of 18, and…a little epilogue. ;-) And just to whet your appetites a little more, Tory and Colin will be our cover models in April, as well! Eeee!!

Also, we’ve got our first one-shot comic launching this month with Denise Schroeder’s “Before You Go,” on March 14th! Plus, there will be new chapters of Dusk in Kalevia and  Tokyo Demonsboth audio and prose.

In more general news, the March fanart prompt is up in the forums! There’s no prize this time around, but we still love seeing what you all come up with! http://sparklermonthly.com/forums/topic/monthly-prompt-challenge-3-march/

There’s still another 48 or so for anyone who wants to send us an audio pitch! The submissions deadline is Sunday, 11:59pm EST: http://sparklermonthly.com/forums/topic/february-is-audio-month/

And last but not least, Cherry Bomb, our 18+ line, launches this month as well, and just wait ’til you see what we’ve been cooking up for you!

Hopefully the polar vortex has done its worst for the year, but if not, feel free to hunker down with Sparkler to keep you warm! I’ll be hanging out here in Los Angeles, knitting hats for all my poor frozen comrades back East…

A month of romance!

It’s a huge month for us here at Sparkler–we’ve got all four of our prose series updating, a new chapter of Awake, and a new chapter of Off*Beat!

And for our subscriber exclusive this month, Jess Chavez brings us a Dead Endings side-story about what our favorite spirit hunters do on the most romantic night of the year. (BTW, while planning this story, we had a little internal discussion about our favorite Valentine’s experiences, and mine involved drinking heavily with some college friends while watching men’s Olympic figure skating. It was awesome! But not nearly as awesome as what Gabriella and Cailen are up to…)

In other news, we’re looking for audio pitches, so if you’re a fan of Japanese drama CDs, or you’re part of the Welcome to Night Vale craze and want to try your hand crafting something to tickle the ears of Sparkler subscribers and make their hearts go pitter-pat, this is your chance! Becca, our head of audio, is fielding questions in the forum all month, and our general guidelines can be found here as well:  (http://sparklermonthly.com/submissions-questions/)

Also, winners have been chosen in our January Fanart contest, but the Valentine’s Fanart Prompt will run all through this month, ending in a raffle on March 1st. Read all about it here: http://sparklermonthly.com/forums/topic/monthly-prompt-challenge-2-february/  We got some amazing submissions the first time around, and we’re all eager to see more!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Little hiccup with Off*Beat this month

Hey, Sparkler readers! We’re sorry to say that Off*Beat is unexpectedly behind this month; Jen has been having issues with her baby. (Nothing serious, thankfully! Just a baby being a baby. :D) She’s still working her butt off to catch up, and we’ve rearranged this month’s schedule to compensate:

Week 3 (Friday, Jan 17th): Tokyo Demons Audio, Chapter 8, Part 2

Week 4 (Friday, Jan 24th) Tokyo Demons prose, Chapter 7, Part 1

Week 5 (Friday, Jan 31st): Dusk in Kalevia debut!

We’re hoping that we’ll have an Off*Beat release somewhere in there, but we won’t announce anything until we have more solid news from Jen. Sorry for the delay!

New Series for a New Year!

Happy 2014, Sparkler fans!

2013 was obviously a huge year for us, from announcing this whole shebang, making the trek to TCAF, and running a successful Kickstarter to reprint Off*Beat vol. 1 & 2, to actually launching the magazine over the summer, and then continuing to strive to give you fun new things to read (and listen to!) every month. Your enthusiasm and support has warmed our hearts and kept our hard-working creators working their hardest, even while caring for an infant, in the case of Jen Quick! We’ve got some exciting plans in store for 2014, so we look forward to sharing a whole lot more with you this new year!

Just to be sure we start things off with a bang, this month we bring you a thrilling new light novel, Dusk in Kalevia, by Emily Compton, with illustrations by the amazing Onorobo! I don’t think any of us were expecting to run a Cold War spy drama within our first year of launching this magazine, but Emily totally knocked our socks off with this story, and we think you’re going to love it. Stay tuned on January 31st, when the first chapter goes live for paid subscribers!

In other news, submissions are closed for prose, with some responses still outstanding for comics (ugh, I’m so sorry…), but for audio fans, and we know you’re out there, submissions will be opening up in February 2014! There’s an exciting world of audio dramas out there these days, so if you’ve got an idea to tickle listeners’ eardrums, start planning your submission now! More details here:  http://sparklermonthly.com/submissions-questions/

Also, we hope you stop on by the Sparkler Forums to check out our Winter Fanart Prompt! There are already some amazing pieces up there, but the current contest will go through January and end in a raffle on Feb 1st:

Happy New Year!! Whee!

New title announcement: Dusk in Kalevia

In addition to the debut of Dead Endings this month, we’ll be premiering another light novel in January: Dusk in Kalevia by new author Emily Compton and webcomic artist/Tumblr darling Onorobo! (Rest of Tumblr NSFW.)

Happy holidays from Sparkler Monthly!

New series: Dead Endings!

Sparkler Monthly is proud to announce our newest series, debuting right now in Issue #005: Dead Endings, a light novel by Jessica Chavez and Irene Flores! This darkly funny ghost story/mystery/thriller follows a trio of NYC university students–all of whom have limited contact with the supernatural–as they investigate a series of strange murders in the Big Apple. Cussing and drinking abound! Chapter 1 is available now to subscribers, and the paywall will come down (and stay down) next Friday for free reading. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, we’re sad to also announce that Dire Hearts will be going on indefinite hiatus due to the health of Christy Lijewski (creator). You can read more details here. We wish her a speedy recover so she can return to her wonderful comic.

This weekend is the last time your posts on the forum count toward our December raffle, so get in there and get chatty for your chance to win prizes! And as mentioned last week, the coupon code sparkler2013 at check-out gets you 10% off your order (subscriptions not included) until the end of the year.

Enjoy the rest of Issue #005 this month, including the great Sparkler holiday card and bookmarks from Romy for subscribers. And have a lovely holiday and new year!

An important note about Dire Hearts

Sparkler Monthly is sad to announce that Dire Hearts is going on indefinite hiatus. Christy Lijewski has been dealing with chronic health issues for some time now, and while she powered through the launch of Sparkler like a champ, her ongoing problems are preventing her from making further progress on the series for the time being, in spite of her best efforts. We hope that this hiatus will be short-lived, and we’ll do our best to continue to provide quality comics content while Christy’s taking some time off to recover. And don’t fret–we’ve got a few things in store that we hope you’ll be excited about!

In the meantime, please join us in wishing her a speedy recovery!

Sincerely,
Sparkler Editorial
